Yesterday, while walking home our two dogs, I spotted a skeleton along the side of the road. My husband thought it was the skeleton of a cow. But upon closer inspection, I realized, it was not. It was actually a skeleton of a dead dog.
I was not surprised. Not at all. The vacant lot, where we found the dog's skeleton, was notoriously known as the 'killing fields' -- as my husband and I called it -- where unsuspecting stray dogs are dragged into the slaughter area (by the mango tree), hanged upside down, beaten on the head several times, cut on the throat, skinned whole, and cooked.
Dog eaters abound in the area, where a couple of squatter colonies could be found. It is said that dog meat lovers slaughter and eat dogs here on quite a regular basis.
Letting my husband and two dogs go home ahead of me, I inspected the killing fields with two slum kids who know the area by heart. They led me from one dog skeleton to another. They said that the barangay law enforcers capture a lot of stray dogs on the streets and sell them to potential dog eaters at PHP50.00 to PHP100 per live dog. Unbelievable! The last time I checked, killing dogs is illegal under The Animal Welfare Act of the Philippines. Ugh.
